There was a light breeze blowing and the sun was shining bright as the group of people arrived at Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon, Texas. There were nine amazing people willing to jump out of a plane in little Courtney's honor. It's a miracle that the six year old girl is still alive today. Courtney has the terminal illness Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 1. She wasn't expected to live to celebrate her second birthday. Courtney can think and feel just like any other little girl her age. But the disease has taken so much from her body. She can't speak and she has a ventilator that must breathe for her. Courtney has lost all ability to move her hands except for one tiny finger. She can not turn her head or sit up, stand or walk. Courtney has to be fed through a tube in her stomach because she can not swallow. In spite of all the things Courtney can not do, it is the things she can do that keeps her family going, taking care of her twenty four hours a day. Courtney's smile is contagious and her eyes are as blue as the sky. Her hair is bright red which always gets attention. Her mother and grandmother have a motto for Courtney, " everything at least once". They want to let Courtney experience as many things as she can while she is here, at least once. Courtney has had many adventures, some as simple as sitting in her wheelchair accessible van while it is pulled through the car wash. Her grandmother, Linda Rosas says that she watches children's programs on television with Courtney while she lays in her hospital bed. If they see children doing something and Courtney smiles then she says she will try her best to arrange the same experience for her beloved granddaughter. We don't focus on the fact that Courtney is going to die but instead chose to focus on the life that she has. We cherish every moment. Courtney has changed our lives, making us appreciate the little things in life more and seeing things differently. This was a fundraiser for the family to help pay for medical expenses for Courtney that insurance will not cover. Her grandmother, Linda Rosas says this event is Courtney's legacy. Each time these people remember the time that they went skydiving they will remember that they skydived for Courtney. Courtney will live on forever in their hearts and memories.
