CommentsHello everyone,
I realized today that i had not checked the message board in a while, it breaks my heart to read how my sister feels through every holiday and everyday of life; see, she puts a brave face in front of our family, and I think is mainly to help Mom and the rest of us deal w/the pain, such graceful soul, it should be us helping them. Somebody at work asked me about the race this year, and it felt good and proud of Regina & Jim's hard work, so as soon as you get an update posted, people are interested. I would like to extend myself to any family dealing w/SMA to contact me, if you have any questions or if i can help in anyway (I mean it), especially in the NY area. well talk to you all soon.

CommentsWell, it's been a long...too long time since i've posted...This summer has been very busy for me. After experiencing, what I guess it's normal, as some say, of not wanting to even be alive, I finally decided that i needed to go back to school. I felt in my heart that's what I wanted to do all along but felt very weak emotionally. I've gone back to get my nursing degree and luckilly since I already have my bachelor's in business, it won't take me as long. I decided to take 3 classes in the summer: chemistry, anatomy & physiology and the lab...needless to say it was a mistake! I was literally reading all the time and that was just to get by, I had 2 - 3 test every week and it was not easy but now that it's done I'm glad I did it.
This week has been quite difficult for us, September 15 was Ryan's 7th birthday. It has not gotten any easier or any less painful. His physical absence hurts so much and as much as I want to celebrate him and the wonderful boy he is, I cry and feel like i want to die. It helped that my mom was here. We went to his mass at 7am and Father Baker did a very nice short talk about him and us. We went to the cemetery which I love and hate at the same time. We brought him tons of flowers and balloons and a windmill that had an angel on it, very beautiful. At night, 8:46 to be exact, since that is the time he was born we lit candles all around the pool area and lit his birthday cake, chocolate as he liked! We sang happy birthday and released 7 balloons. I still feel a sureal feeling talking about this. It doesn't feel right that he is not with us. I'm sitting here typing and hoping to hear his bipap. Oh, my dearest Ryan, I love you sooooo much and miss you terribly. As I tell you everyday, my only comfort is knowing that you are playing and having the time of your life, no longer bound by the horrible effects of SMA. My little, brave, handsome, loving angel, mommy loves you so much. I pray to dream with Ryan every night and still can't. I pray to God that he allows me a glimpse of my baby in heaven and still nothing but I keep praying, everynight! Well, I'm too upset right now so I will sign off. My prayers are with my SMA family, especially all the children living and surviving with this condition.

CommentsThanks Milli for your loving words...And thanks for always being a great sister and a very loving aunt! Ryan loves you very very much! We miss you and wish you could have been here for Easter. We had a wonderful and also bitter/sweet Easter, as all of our holidays and really most our days. My mom was in town to spend it w/us and go to the cemetery. She brought special flowers from NY to put in Ryan's grave site. After mass we went to the cemetery, for although I know Ryan is not there and he is w/me all the time, I feel so much peace and love when we go. We decorated it w/bunnies and tons of beautiful flowers which he loved and I always tell him that that is just a special place we gather to decorate how he wants and just share some peaceful, loving time. We miss him so much and as hard as we try not to cry 'cause I don't want him to worry about mommy and daddy, it never fails that we break down. I know some say that time helps w/the pain but I can honestly say that our pain is as raw, if not more now than ever. I cannot believe that it's been a year already. Jim (my husband) and I spend a lot of time talking and wishing we could turn back time. We know it's impossible but we cannot help feeling this. Anyway, after the cemetery we came home and had a wonderful dinner and thanked God for us being together and for having giving us, although for a short time, the most wonderful son in the world. In the spirit of Easter, we are trying to find a renewal, rebirth feeling in our lives but I have to say that it is pretty difficult. On a different note, we finally had our meeting with the guys who organized Ryan's 5k run and it was great to talk about next year being as good, if possible better event. We are trying to have it around the same time and at the same place but we won't know until we submit our application to the city of Miami Beach. I will post updates as soon as we know. Ok, I have to go 'cause it's pretty late. My prayers are with and for all the kiddos that are ill right now and for all the families that are struggling.

Well, a little late but better late than
never!!! I'd like to give an update on the AMAZING, MOST
BEAUTIFUL, UPLIFTING event Ryan's 5K run was. We had such a
wonderful turn out of both runners/walkers and volunteers. I
was very touched, excited and just felt so much love in my
heart to see so much goodness in so many people. I'm not
surprised, though for anything that has Ryan's name and his
purpose just seems to work out beautifully. I know some may
say "that's just his mom talking" but I honestly can tell you
that I try to stay pretty objective and when I look at the
events we have put together, with how little we know, it is
amazing how well and how much help pours out to land a hand
and to be a part of it. The day started very early, 4am. We
needed to set up at 5:45am and we live about 45min from where
the run was taking place. My mom, sister, and nephew were
here and they helped so much, just having their support is
very helpful. When we arrived, I was amazed at the amount of
volunteers that turned out (specially at such an early hour).
Thank you to all my volunteers, Cindy Gardner and her
daughther Kelly who everytime I see I just feel so much love
for them and from them. Frank, Rosalba, Adriana, Angelo who
are my best friend's husband and siblings and are true loving
people. Vanessa who I've only met once before but is
obviously a very nice person and has such a loving, calm
demeanor. Joanne (one of our angels on this earth) She is
someone who has never hesitated to help and lend a hand for
many years now, thank you and to your sister and nephew ( what
a great young man!!! ) Rita, Larry, Gene, and many other
Great Eskaters (sorry...I'm forgetting names) You guys are
GREAT!!! And the many police officers who donated their time,
to ensure safety and a good turn out...THANK YOU ALL SO VERY
MUCH!!! Words can never really express how you all have
touched my heart. The DJ was great and the group that handled
monitoring/timing the race and runners - Awesome!!! There
were so many people and moments that just brought me to tears
but one of them that really cought me by surprise was a chant
that the SWAT team put together in memory of Ryan and they
sang it as they ran the streets of South Beach . I am in true
awe at the compassion, love and respect for life that is shown
by my husband's friends, peers and overall police department.
They are one of the best group of people I have ever met. In
the midst of our saddness, they are always a ray of light and
goodness that shines on us. Thank you Miami Beach Police
Department!!! In conclusion, the day was a great success, the
weather could not be nicer, clear blue skies that reflected
off the water, a good DJ, refreshments which we will work on
for next year and everyone's feedback was positive and
uplifting. We gave out medals and trophies and we are a
registered official run so we look forward to our second one
next year. Well, I will be sending Laura pictures which we
just got developed, they are great!

CommentsWell, just a quick update on what's been going on...We're very busy w/the run and finalizing all the details, food, bev, running numbers, tshirts, medals, trophies...etc. We're still looking for volunteers so all of you who cannot run or walk, if you want to be a part of this, please feel free to call me 786-303-6273 and sign up to volunteer that day. I'm very excited 'cause everything seems to be going great and I know it's going to be a GREAT day!!! Also, this weekend was the Great Eskate and I think IT went very well...they had about 300 rollerbladers and had lots of raffles! They donate their proceeds to Families of SMA in honor of Ryan so we are very grateful and appreciate their interest in helping innocent little children and look forward to this being a BETTER YEAR than last!. I met w/the organizers on thursday night and brought them the "so many angels" video, well needless to say it really made an impace (thank you Audrey for supporting me and always being there for us!) I also spoke w/them about SMA and Ryan and our goals for the foundation and FSMA. I think it was a great meeting and they all seemed very interested which I appreciated. On Friday, at the opening ceremony we gave a little tiny speech, but nevertheless, we talked about SMA, if only for a couple of minutes, we hope we reached SOMEONE! So, overall, this month is showing to be a great month for raising $ and AWARENESS!!! Please wish us luck w/the run and hopefully we can make a difference in bringing us closer to a CURE!!!

CommentsToday was the anniversary of Ryan's accident. On this day Ryan experienced a horrible choking episode...I went to my friend's house today to print some more entry forms and got home just in time for when every thing happened last year. In my sick mind I kept thinking, driving back home that when I got home I could do better what I didn't do better last year, maybe Ryan would come back to us....I got home and nothing was different except for my and my husband's wanting and longing for Ryan to be back w/us....But I guess those are now dreams....We love you little Ryan so much and know that you are with us; however we long for you, your wit, your laugh, your sense of humor, your toes, your soft skin, your sweet voice, putting to bed and reading and lauging at silly things....Gosh, I could never have enough space for all the things that we miss about you. Holding and kissing, I guess mostly! Anyhow, we hope you are all in good health and just waiting for that break that will make all our dreams come true (a cure or treatment) God bless you all!

CommentsI cannot be more excited about our 1st annual Run / Fitness walk it is the nicest honor that my husband's job could have ever done for our precious Ryan. The men and women at the Miami Beach Police Department took it upon themselves to organize and put together a major official run / fitness walk in memory of Ryan...My heart gets so overwhelmed when I feel and see the goodness of people but I have to say that it doesn't surprise me. This department has been a pillar of strength and support and I find myself that in the midst of our pain and suffering, I can actually feel the love and care that they demonstrate and it gives me the strength to carry on...OUR CHILDREN ARE AMAZING, for they are the motivators behind most great actions. The run is taking place Feb 22nd at 7:45am and is a wonderful course along Ocean Drive; which is beautiful. I hope any of you that can participate, will come and if you cannot run or walk and would like to volunteer, well, we need you very much too so call me at 786-303-6273 or email me. Well, this has us very busy these days and that is something we appreciate because the Holidays were just awful for us. Christmas was Ryan's most favorite holiday and it represented so many things to him and us. Always thinking the New Year would bring him a ray of hope that a cure or atleast a treatment would come...Well, now I just think of the many children that are living with SMA and that thought keeps me wanting to fight harder and harder. I know all you "Moms" and "Dads" have these same hopes and I know we are close and we will get there!!! I also wanted to expend our
condolences to Abbey's family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I also want to thank you, Debbie, for your support and your assistance towards fighting SMA. This is the only way we will stop the deaths of many innocent lives and eventually will give all the courageous little children the gift the are so deserving of, the ability to crawl, walk, swallow, talk...We have to come together and I depend on all our friends and family and loving, compassionate people to accomplish this very reachable mission. Although my pain is constant and it grounds me so many times, It is the support and beautiful actions of so many people, as well as my love for my son that give me strength to go on. During this holiday season I hope all of you experience love, peace and happiness with your families and for those of you that have your children, please hug and give them kisses and treasure your time together. For those of you that have lost a loved one, I send you all my love and prayers, for I know how painful these times are. I am trying to keep very busy and not spend too much time on what I miss and long but rather on helping some of our local disabled children. I have called a couple of organizations that board children with disabilities and I am looking forward to bringing them some joy and happiness this xmas. All my blessings to all of you!

As I was reading about RYAN'S HOPE 1st Annual event, it brought back memories of that day and how beautiful it was, how much fun we had and how right you are about Ryan's spirit being there. We had a great time!! Great JOB!! describing the event and the kind of day it was. I liked the pictures. Hooray for more RYAN'S HOPE FOUNDATION events to come. I'm sure they'll be as successful as the first one.

CommentsI cannot be any happier that we are getting up and running and I only have the greatest of expectations from our foundation as it is representative of my son's life and spirit. We hope to make an impact in helping and assisting our SMA family as we help fund research and eagerly await a CURE or
at least a TREATMENT. We also hope to be a source of comfort for the grieving families, for the pain of loosing a child is unbearable in so many ways. Thank you all who have helped keep Ryan's spirit alive and who continue to support the fight against SMA.
