The River City Ski Club will be hosting the 2nd annual Haley Mitchell Ski-a-thon for SMA on October 7th, 2000.  The purpose of the tournament is to raise money to benefit Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a non-profit volunteer organization.  Families of SMA provides support and education to families affected by the disease and is the main financial support for national research efforts in search of a treatment and cure.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a deadly neuromuscular disease that deteriorates the spinal cord cells that control muscular function.  SMA is the leading genetic killer of children under the age of 2.  The life expectancy of SMA Type 1 children is one to two years maximum.

The tournament will be held at Fun Junktion Park on Simpson Ditch Road, 3 miles south of Elizabeth City and will begin at 8:30 a.m.  Skiers will be asked to raise pledges and contributions to sponsor them in the competition with all money going to Families of SMA.

Anyone that wishes to sponsor a skier or make a contribution to the cause may contact Barbara Austin at 765-546-0649 or 1-800-335-4836.  You may also contact Jeff Mitchell at 252-338-1637 or 252-331-6296.
